After reading a few different blogs and searching through Pinterest, I found the top three recommended ways to clean a dirty microwave. Microwaving certain solutions helps create a steamy environment inside the microwave that helps dampen and loosen the stubborn food stuck against the inside walls.
Citrus. The Real Kitchen and Beyond recommends that you fill a glass bowl (or another microwave safe bowl) half-way with water and then add lemon, orange, or lime slices. Kitchn recommends that you squeeze lemon juice in a bowl filled part-way with water. Microwave up to four minutes then wipe down the inside down. If there are some stubborn spots, microwave for another minute then wipe down again. Use the leftover water to clean the microwave plate.
Vinegar. Sweet Southern Mel suggests using a combination of 1.5 cups of water and .5 cups of vinegar in a microwave-safe container. Microwave for three minutes and then remove the container carefully with a dry rag– it will be very hot. Use a sponge or a microfiber cloth to wipe down the inside of the microwave.
Vinegar and Lemon. Simply Stacie uses both citrus and vinegar to clean a microwave. Using a microwave-safe bowl, fill part-way with water then add a splash a vinegar and a few lemon slices. Microwave for five minutes and let it cool down. Carefully remove the bowl and wipe the inside of the microwave.
Why lemons and/or vinegar? Vinegar is a natural cleaning agent and the citric acid in lemons and other citrus fruit is a natural and powerful cleaning agent as well.
